gucciThe urban hipster movement of today is closely associated with another cultural fad – that of the fixed-gear bicycle. In areas where driving a car like a real grown-up isn’t as practical or convenient, these bikes and their hip young owners seem to flourish. Their uniforms are easy enough to recognize: there’s the ironic faded t-shirt, the European cycling cap and the low-top Vans with socks.

This youth subculture has also picked up on a fashion accessory of old – the Gucci messenger bag. Courier bags were first created out of necessity, allowing bike messengers to deliver papers and packages on the move with ease. prada-bagLong before our time – and our parents’ time, and perhaps even our grandparents’ time – in the 19th century, rural doctors made routine house calls around the American countryside. They would ride hundreds of miles at a stretch over rugged terrain to reach ailing farmers and under-the-weather widows. Of course this practice predated the advent of the automobile, so doctors had no choice but to travel by horse and buggy.

Even more interesting to today’s fashion-savvy ladies, however, is the fact that those doctors became famous for toting a little black bag with them. A cutting-edge line of Prada purses has even been modeled after the classic doctor’s bag, but the contents are much different. Whereas old-timey physicians came bearing aspirin, stethoscopes, syringes and ligatures, trendy ladies are more likely to have makeup, cell phones and breath mints.
